Great day at IU

Lincoln and I spent this beautiful day at IU going to the football team's spring game festivities and a baseball game at the new ballpark. IU won the baseball game 11-3 and we loved our outfield seats.

Rain, rain...go away?

Ready to go fishing!
Heard on the news last night that this is the wettest May in Fort Wayne's recorded history. Already over 9" this month with three days left. It's the 8th wettest month ever in Fort Wayne. Could be why the horses are floating? Not really, but they're close. The pond is at the brim and using the overflow pipe toward the field in back liberally.

We had our Ash trees treated this morning from the nasty Emerald Ash borer. Hopefully we can hold them off for a while, unlike many other cities across the nation. [EAB site & Time]

Spring Time Already?

Rowan on the new Dixie Chopper
I think we're going to hit 70 or even 80 degrees this weekend in The Fort. That's the kind of spring weather we need! Time to dry the grounds out at The Stables. I'd have to say I'm ready to hit the mowing duties when that time comes, we're all set with out new Dixie Chopper. Cuts grass at 4 acres an hour! Better than the tractor that was 4 acres in 2 days.

Rowan got glasses this week. She is farsighted and has another eye issue that the lenses need to correct. So far she seems to really enjoy them. They were on when I picked her up from school yesterday, so that was a good sign. I think she'll like seeing much better and know that the glasses help with that.

A hearty Happy Birthday to Nana yesterday and my nephew Gustavo Byers today! He turned 3 today and we're celebrating tomorrow with his friends and family in Indianapolis. Three already? Where has the time gone...

I'd like to say what this teacher in Japan is doing is what I would have done, but I'm not sure if I'd have stayed. I looked at the map of the US recommended evacuation zone for the nuclear plants and my town is about 25 miles outside that. Too darn close. [Japan Times]

Spring must be right around the corner, because the Cubs are starting Spring Training in Arizona! There'll be springlike temps this week in Fort Wayne. 50 degrees on Thursday? Begin the Begin - IU Basketball tips off tonight

Go IU!
Like the Phoenix, IU basketball is rising back up! Great day yesterday to be a Hoosier as we got top instate talent Cody Zeller commitment (sorry to my Butler Bear dad). This is just the latest step in IU's return to the top of college basketball. In the class for next season, we got a top 20 (Cody Zeller) and a top 100 (Austin Etherington) player. For the 2012 class we already have a top 10 (Hanner Perea), a top 30 (Ron Patterson), and a top 100 (Peter Jurkin). Hell, IU got commitments from two of the top HS freshman in the country in September. All but one of those players that have now committed to the Hoosiers are from Indiana. Attention college coaches: the Indiana state borders are now CLOSED! Top instate talent is deciding on the Hoosiers, again. It's about time! I was tired of getting stuck with these tickets. [Yahoo! Rivals & USA Today]

The reason I start off this week's post with this news is because the IU season starts tonight in Bloomington vs. Florida Gulf Coast. Uncle Dave and I will be there, center court row 39 seats 3 & 4 losing our voices and clapping till it hurts. I haven't been this excited for a basketball game in Bloomington since DJ White's senior year. That's a bittersweet memory though, cause it was that year that the walls finally came tumbling down with the Kelvin Sampson fiasco hitting the fan. I'm also well aware that this will be another rough season for the Hoosiers. The Big Ten is stacked this year, many saying it's the best conference in the nation. So a couple of games above .500 with a trip to the NIT would be a great way to finish this season. Begin the begin, it will only get better. [ESPN.com]

Game time 6:30 on Big Ten Network. Look for me, I'll be the one in Crimson.

Speaking of IU, new unis this year. Not much difference, but they look like they 'fit' better than last year's tired design. [Green Banner Publications & Rivals.com]

Anyone else ever won a pair of Chuck Taylor All Stars? I LOVED my Chucks, loved 'em. Wore my Chucks playing basketball for North Side one season. We could get them from the coach's office for $25 a pair. I doubt I can wear any now because the arch support is basically nonexistent, and my plantar fascia don't play that. However, I may need to figure something out because (Website of the Week) you can design your own pair of Chuck Taylors. Very sweet. [Wikipedia & Converse.com]

Got her started early...It's Indiana.
IU's current roster is all about team and family. Watch out for Oladipo, he's the real deal. [Indiana Daily Student]

Saw one of the most ridiculous quarters of basketball this week. The Indiana Pacers shot 20 for 21 in the 3rd quarter Tuesday night scoring 54 points in 12 minutes to blow out the Denver Nuggets. It was, like I said, ridiculous. They raised their SEASON FG% from 25th in the league to 9th in one night! Here's a video of their first 20 shots that quarter, all makes. [Pacers.com]

Wrap up our Hoosier heavy post today with great news that Martha the "Mop Lady" will be making her return to IU basketball games. Any old school IU fans remember Martha singing the IU school song while mopping the hallways of Assembly Hall in the late 70's - early 80's? That's the time I was growing into the IU fan I am today, nice to have her back. [Inside the Hall]

Have a great weekend! Looks like this may be the last of the 'summer' weather. 70 degrees today?!? Enjoy and GO IU!

Summer Weather in October!

An oldie, but a goodie
This is what fall weather is all about! Going to hit the 80's again tomorrow, but then have the nice cool evening. Love this fall weather!

I think the horses don't mind it as well. They're starting to get a bit fuzzy with their winter coats coming in, but the cool evenings are nice in the barn for them. We've even been closing the doors at night, which might take some getting used to for them.

Football last week was a 50/50 experience. With me and Uncle Dave in attendance, IU came up short vs. Michigan on Saturday afternoon, but the Redskins took care of the Eagles in Philly on Sunday afternoon. We'll mention fantasy football again when my team actually wins a game! Ugh, it's going to be a long season there. Happy 50th to 17th Street Stadium, now called Memorial Stadium, in Bloomington. [Inside Indiana]

An early Happy Birthday to my brother Christian. He turns 36 Thursday and will be in Fort Wayne to celebrate! Don't hurt yourself running about Chicago this weekend, bro!

How's your Summer going? - Friday July 16th

It's been a while since my last update. There's lots of things going on at the new house which has been keeping us busy. I should have a picture update this weekend with the finished barn and stalls. Brooke and her dad are working on that project right now. Brooke's cousins Sydney and Mike are up from Florida to spend the weekend on the farm. Plenty to do!

That's Rowan in her new pool and swimming suit on the front lawn last weekend. She really likes pouring water over her head in the pool. Water Day at daycare is quite an adventure with this little girl! The video at the bottom is Rowan biking around the driveway on her tricycle. She's getting pretty good at it!

Lots of linkage for this post, since it's been so long...

Wrigley Bound Tomorrow - Friday May 14th

The packing continues at Beaverbook. We're surrounded by empty and full boxes of stuff in about every room. Less than two weeks to go until we must vacate the premises. Rowan was enjoying breakfast this week with her Learning Apple, yogurt, milk, and her new favorite: chocolate Cheerios.

Poppa Day at Wrigley tomorrow for Cubs/Pirates. This will be our second annual trip with Rowan's poppas (my dad and Brooke's dad). Last year the Cubbies blew a 9th inning lead but won it in the bottom half of the inning. I'd like another win with less drama. Looks like it will be about 10 degrees warmer this year. It was freezing last year! Hope to have photos up next week of the adventure. [Baseball Reference]

D-Day 20 was on Wednesday. It's been 20 years since I discovered I had diabetes mellitus type 1. Let's just say this past Wednesday was a much better day than May 12th, 1990! Onward...

Saw Iron Man 2 last Friday with Travis and his girlfriend. We really enjoyed it and highly recommend seeing it in the theaters. There could have been more action, but they did a good job with a funny script and it moved along nicely for a 2 hour movie. Robin Hood starts tonight and it looks like a good one too. Russell Crowe does good stuff, so that might be in the queue if we weren't busy packing boxes. [IMDb.com]

Spring is Good - Friday April 9

Mom, Rowan, and Della at the Orchard Creek
Interesting week for us. We got an offer on our house and accepted it. Next step finalizing things with the sale and then getting a new place where Della can live with us. We all went out to see Della this evening to put a blanket on her for the cold night. Rowan loved the kitties and the horses at the barn. She better, she'll be seeing more of Big D!

Happy Birthday's this past week to cousin Gus and Nana Brenda. Gus turned 2 on Thursday and Nana, 29 on Wednesday!  ; )

Just how did they come up with Hot Tub Time Machine? The movie director and John Cusack have worked together several times in the past and that helps. Only 28 days to Iron Man 2., could it be as big a hit as The Dark Knight? [IMDb.com & Chicago Tribune & LA Times]

Friday, December 18

Friday December 18th

Last blog post before winter...ugh, winter. Monday is the first day of winter and it looks like the weather will be agreeing with that description. I think Rowan will love playing in the snow and we just may get some of that for Christmas next week. She certainly loves to wear her new winter coat Grandma Jeanne got her.

Sheridan family Christmas festivities begin this weekend as my brother and his family make the trek up to Indiana. It'll be fun watching Ella and Grace play with Rowan for the first time. She was way to small last Thanksgiving to enjoy playing. Christian and I will be hitting Assembly Hall on Tuesday evening to see IU take on Loyola. Should be a decent game and hopefully a win!

Speaking of IU basketball, Uncle Dave and I had a great trip to Bloomington last Saturday for the Kentucky game. We played them to a standstill in the first half, but there are two halves in a basketball game and they ran past us in the last 20 minutes. A much better showing than last year's blowout in Lexington, that's for sure. The new basketball development center is nearing completion. Hope I get a chance for a tour, this place looks pretty sweet. [IU News Room]

An IU athlete was named a Rhodes Scholar this past week. Good stuff. [IU News Room]

The Big Ten Conference is looking to add another school or more to the league. They are missing out on the lucrative football conference championship game that most other large leagues have. You need 12 teams for that game, and the Big Ten is one short. My pick for the new school would be Pitt. I guess we'll see in 12-18 months who gets in. [Chicago Tribune]

This week's News Quiz and Pop Culture Quiz. I felt that the pop one was a bit easier this week, mostly because I got the same score on both. [Chicago Tribune]

Have you seen the new Iron Man 2 trailer yet? Holy cow, I wish that movie was coming out this weekend! I can't wait until next May. The new movie that's blowing minds this weekend is Avatar. It's getting some great reviews and seems to be a perfect mix of computer generated stuff and storytelling. Just might have to break the movie dry spell for this one. Saturday December 12th

Winter is here! A very cold week with snow showers and high winds. I know it's December, but this was a nasty week of wintry weather. It is still officially only autumn until the 21st. That's Rowan on the doctor's table this week. She had a great visit with Dr. Thomas.

Saw the Hoosiers play a solid 25 minutes to only be outscored 18-0 and go down 17 midway through the second half. This Kentucky team will be in the hunt for championships all year. Very talented team. IU has some growing up to do, but it's still so much better than last season. We were down 31-7 at one point last year to UK.

Friday November 20th

Rowan's fifteen months old this week. She's becoming quite the busy body around the house as well. Butsu turned 5 years old this week too. Another family birthday this week: Happy Birthday Aunt Sharon in Texas!

Bucket Game this weekend in Bloomington. Brook and I will be in our seats one last time this season. Hope they can salvage the end of it cause it's been a tough stretch for the last two months. Both teams are playing for pride as well as the Old Oaken Bucket. Each team was eliminated from bowl consideration last week. [Bleacher Report]

Indiana basketball got off to an impressive start last Friday with Brooke and I in attendance (that's Brooke on the floor below with The Banners in the background). Nice margin of victory vs. the over matched Howard Bison. A much closer game was had on Monday vs. South Carolina - Upstate...then last night they were pretty much dominated by Ole Miss in Puerto Rico. Let's hope the next two games there fare a bit better...and more competitive.

Friday November 13th

With the Friday updates, we seem to run into this quite a bit, don't we? It's the 3rd one we've had this year! [Examiner]

Rowan had a great time at the IU football game last week. It's so nice to be innocent and not care who wins and loses! The picture at the top is in preparations for the day and the one at the bottom is her and mom enjoying kettle corn in the concourse area of Memorial Stadium. One more game this season and it's the Bucket Game next Saturday. [Wikipedia]

IU's basketball season officially tips off tonight in Bloomington vs. Howard University. Brooke and I are making the trip for opening night very shortly. We're favored by quite a bit in this one, so it should be fun to see. Might be another long season this year, but it has to be better than last year! Still have the two tickets to each game, so if anyone wants to see a game let me know. [Howard Bison homepage]

Fall movies are kicking into high gear this weekend. Several wide releases that are good for action or drama. Two in particular are the back home from war drama The Messenger (90% fresh) and the Earth going down in flames 2012 (36% fresh). I've been reading lots of reviews on 2012 (review 1 and review 2) and it sounds like what you'd expect from the guy who did Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow. The Earth is destroyed over 3 hours, which seems a bit long to me. The Messenger sounds like a timely drama about soldiers that tell next of kin that their loved one has died in the war overseas. Solid actors Woody Harrelson and Ben Foster play the lead roles. Pirate Radio (56% fresh) also sounds like an entertaining flick, it starts this week as well. Friday, November 6

Friday November 6th

There was some beautiful fall weather this week. No rain and sunny days, a few of which were quite warm. Gotta love that! Two nights of leaf raking is the only down side. Our trees still have about 25% of their leaves left, so we're not done raking. That's Brooke and Rowan enjoying the leaf pile in the back yard.

Rowan graduated from the nursery room to the 1 year old room this week. She'll be full time with the 1 year olds on Monday. It is true that they grow up too fast! I used to drop her off in the nursery as the biggest kid last week and now she's the smallest in the 1 year old drop off room. She loves it though. I got there early on Thursday to pick her up and she was laughing and playing with the other big kids in the gym room. Very cool.

Aunt Shiloh was moved in just fine last Sunday. Her new townhouse in Indy is pretty sweet. She's stoked because there's a Starbucks right around the corner from her...better than running into the mall for your java like she did in SC. It's nice to have you so close, Aunt Shiloh!

Happy Birthday this past Tuesday to Poppa Jeff. We're having birthday dinner in Anderson to celebrate tonight!

Off to another IU game this weekend. Hopefully we'll be able to see it! Wisconsin comes to town. We are looking forward to seeing our friends and hanging out at the tailgate. Maybe we'll win, but I don't think so. First IU regular season basketball game is next Friday vs. Howard. Looking forward to checking this team out this year.

Ninja Monkey's starting QB Jay Cutler and his battle with the Big D. By the way, ended up at $1,110 collected for the Diabetes Walk for me! Another thanks to those who supported us. Aunt Shiloh is moving back this weekend. She'll be setting up in Indianapolis and we're moving her in on Sunday. It'll be nice having her back in the Hoosier state and far enough for her to not get Fort Wayne crazy!

Well last weekend didn't go exactly to plan. Friday night I hit Hoosier Hysteria with Uncle Dave and we had a great time. Saturday morning, Rowan woke up with what we found out was The Croup. Hoosier Hysteria! Friday October 16th

Basketball season starts tonight! Going to IU's Hoosier Hysteria with Uncle Dave this evening to check out the new Indiana Hoosiers. Should be a great time. Tomorrow is homecoming vs. Illinois and we'll have the whole family there for that one. Weather will be getting warmer, so we're ready to go. [AP & Indy Star]

Sunday is the annual Sheridan family trip to Brown County State Park for the leaves and cousin Harrison's birthday, which is Monday. We've been doing this for years, always around the time of Uncle Christian's birthday. That was last Wednesday by the way, Happy Birthday Christian! Should have some pictures of our busy weekend up sometime next week. Looking forward to it! This time Rowan might be running around with her cousin. Last year she slept through the day...

Redskins Nation is up in arms about the state of the team. Lots of anti-Snyder campaigns picking up the last week. Dan Snyder is the meddlesome owner of the Redskins. This Sunday's game has been dubbed Black Sunday by some fans. Should be interesting to see what, if anything, transpires.

We need to get out to a movie! There's one that's garnering some attention this weekend: Where the Wild Things Are. It's taken a few years to get this movie from shoot to theater, but I think it'll be a bit of a mind bender. So far the reviews I've read today are mixed. I wasn't the biggest fan of the book, kind of freaked me out, so maybe Uncle Dave can take a turn on the movie review page after he sees it. He LOVES the book, don't you Douglas? One that Brooke and I saw a trailer for a few weeks back is Whip It. It's getting decent reviews and I think that may be the one we see next. That is if I can get Brooke to skip Saw VI. ; ) [IMDb.com & AP & Wikipedia & Rotten Tomatoes]

Friday October 9th

Well fall is officially here. I don't think the temps reached 65 this week and most days it was cloudy with a bit of rain. Saw in the Chicago Tribune there might be snow up there on Monday...? Yikes. This was very similar weather to our JDRF Walk last Saturday. It was a bit cold with a slight drizzle, but we finished the 2 miles. We're over $1,000 collected as a team so far, but I'm shooting for $1,000 on my own. See my page here.

Rowan took her first ride on a carousel this week. In the food court at Glenbrook Square Mall they have a double decker carousel with all kinds of animals. Rowan and mom took the first spin and then dad got on for another one. On the second, she took to a pony that went up and down...and loved it! The picture up there is from her first ride on a stationary giraffe. Looks like she was ready for that afternoon nap before the ride started!

Well, the baseball season ended for the Cubs last weekend. Playoff baseball is upon us and for the first time in 3 years, no Cubs. My AL team has always been the California Angels (now the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim), so I'll root for them until the Yankees win. It's already decided, right?

We had a great time in Bloomington for the Ohio State game. It was good to see so many tailgate friends we hadn't seen since the 2007 season, our last full year down there. They all asked about Rowan, who stayed with Grandma Brenda in Anderson. The OSU game wasn't so great, but you can't commit penalties and turn the ball over and beat a top ten team. Long way to go for the Hoosiers, but a bowl game is still possible. Big IU weekend next week with basketball Hoosier Hysteria on Friday night. Then we're hoping to take her to the Illinois game on Saturday, depending on the weather.
