Begin the Begin - IU Basketball tips off tonight

Go IU!

Like the Phoenix, IU basketball is rising back up! Great day yesterday to be a Hoosier as we got top instate talent Cody Zeller commitment (sorry to my Butler Bear dad). This is just the latest step in IU's return to the top of college basketball. In the class for next season, we got a top 20 (Cody Zeller) and a top 100 (Austin Etherington) player. For the 2012 class we already have a top 10 (Hanner Perea), a top 30 (Ron Patterson), and a top 100 (Peter Jurkin). Hell, IU got commitments from two of the top HS freshman in the country in September. All but one of those players that have now committed to the Hoosiers are from Indiana. Attention college coaches: the Indiana state borders are now CLOSED! Top instate talent is deciding on the Hoosiers, again. It's about time! I was tired of getting stuck with these tickets. [Yahoo! The reason I start off this week's post with this news is because the IU season starts tonight in Bloomington vs. Florida Gulf Coast. Uncle Dave and I will be there, center court row 39 seats 3 & 4 losing our voices and clapping till it hurts. I haven't been this excited for a basketball game in Bloomington since DJ White's senior year. That's a bittersweet memory though, cause it was that year that the walls finally came tumbling down with the Kelvin Sampson fiasco hitting the fan. I'm also well aware that this will be another rough season for the Hoosiers. The Big Ten is stacked this year, many saying it's the best conference in the nation. So a couple of games above .500 with a trip to the NIT would be a great way to finish this season. Begin the begin, it will only get better. [ESPN.com]

Anyone else ever won a pair of Chuck Taylor All Stars? I LOVED my Chucks, loved 'em. Wore my Chucks playing basketball for North Side one season. We could get them from the coach's office for $25 a pair. I doubt I can wear any now because the arch support is basically nonexistent, and my plantar fascia don't play that. Saw one of the most ridiculous quarters of basketball this week. The Indiana Pacers shot 20 for 21 in the 3rd quarter Tuesday night scoring 54 points in 12 minutes to blow out the Denver Nuggets. It was, like I said, ridiculous. They raised their SEASON FG% from 25th in the league to 9th in one night! Here's a video of their first 20 shots that quarter, all makes. [Pacers.com]

Wrap up our Hoosier heavy post today with great news that Martha the "Mop Lady" will be making her return to IU basketball games. Any old school IU fans remember Martha singing the IU school song while mopping the hallways of Assembly Hall in the late 70's - early 80's? That's the time I was growing into the IU fan I am today, nice to have her back. [Inside the Hall]

October already? Friday October 1

Want some homemade pizza?

Well, the blog has taken a back seat to all that's changed and all that's going on at the new homestead. No excuse, I know. I'm still collecting articles to enlighten and entertain! I'll link them below.

September was a very busy month for me. Fantasy football kicked off with the start of the NFL season. It's Week Four already and my team is terrible. I guess I can handle that since I won the whole thing last year, but it's going to make for a long season and depressing Sundays. Doesn't help that the Redskins took the great Week One win over the Cowboys and turned it into a choke job and butt kicking the next two weeks. Ugh.

We all went down for a camping trip to Bloomington last weekend. IU played a night game on Saturday vs. Akron, so we camped at Paynetown State Recreation Area on Friday and Saturday nights. Rowan loved it. She was very excited to be camping and sleeping in a camper. I think she liked that we were all together in the same area. IU won to move to 3-0 on the season. Michigan comes in tomorrow, so we'll see where they truly stand as a football team tomorrow evening.

The 12th Sheridan Invitational was in the middle of September. That always makes for a busy and hectic time. 34 golfers teed it up with just a few sprinkles that day. For the party that evening, there were a few tense moments with the bonfire. With 20 foot flames, you could see it from US27 which is about a half mile from the house! I don't think we'll be doing fires that big again...

Added some more photos to the Picasa site for these events. I've got a few to add from the camping, but the August, September, and Farm/House albums all have updates in them.

Swinging w/ the Backyardigans and Poppa Bear

Sheridan Stables is moving along nicely, and has their own blog now too. We have power and all the heavy construction is done. The newer pasture stalls still need to be finished up, but we could add more horses. Right now we have 3: Della, Summer, and our boarder Java. We got the pasture seeded with pasture grass, so the horses are on the riding arena ground for the next 5 weeks. We're already looking into getting some of the farmland in the back turned into pasture next spring. We need more area if we're going to have more horses!

Haven't been out to see any new movies in a long time! There's quite a few coming up we'd like to check out, so time to get the movie night back up and running. The reviews are still linked to the main SpydeysWebb page along with the movies we'd like to see in the near future.

Java watching Rowan

The Cubs season has crashed and burned with the ashes swept up and thrown away already! It's now to the point that football is right down the road. IU starts Thursday night and the fantasy football draft is this Friday. Rowan turned two and I've been married for 4 years now. It's been an amazing summer with lots of changes, the biggest being Della's move into our home. Well, not the home itself, but the home at large.

Wrigley Bound Tomorrow - Friday May 14th

The packing continues at Beaverbook. We're surrounded by empty and full boxes of stuff in about every room. Less than two weeks to go until we must vacate the premises. Rowan was enjoying breakfast this week with her Learning Apple, yogurt, milk, and her new favorite: chocolate Cheerios.

Poppa Day at Wrigley tomorrow for Cubs/Pirates. This will be our second annual trip with Rowan's poppas (my dad and Brooke's dad). Last year the Cubbies blew a 9th inning lead but won it in the bottom half of the inning. I'd like another win with less drama. Looks like it will be about 10 degrees warmer this year. It was freezing last year! Hope to have photos up next week of the adventure. [Baseball Reference]

D-Day 20 was on Wednesday. It's been 20 years since I discovered I had diabetes mellitus type 1. Let's just say this past Wednesday was a much better day than May 12th, 1990! Onward...

Saw Iron Man 2 last Friday with Travis and his girlfriend. We really enjoyed it and highly recommend seeing it in the theaters. There could have been more action, but they did a good job with a funny script and it moved along nicely for a 2 hour movie. Robin Hood starts tonight and it looks like a good one too. Russell Crowe does good stuff, so that might be in the queue if we weren't busy packing boxes. [IMDb.com]

Tourney Time Shifter - Friday March 12th

What a great week of weather up here! The snow has melted and we reached upper 60's several days this week. Got out for our first walk and grilled out another night. It's nice enough in the morning that Rowan has moved on to jackets instead of coats. That's her one morning with her Monkey Jacket on.

Anyone print off the Popdose Oscar ballot and play along? Brooke and I tied with 28 points each. We did pretty well with the bigger awards, but she made the wrong move on not picking Mo'nique. That one would have clinched it for her. While I enjoyed Avatar when we saw it in December, The Hurt Locker was a very powerful movie. I watched it last Friday night, Brooke did not. I think she wishes she had now that it won Best Picture, but she didn't feel up for a war movie at the time. And it most definitely is a war movie... [IMDb.com]

Friday October 23rd

Well last weekend didn't go exactly to plan. Friday night I hit Hoosier Hysteria with Uncle Dave and we had a great time. Saturday morning, Rowan woke up with what we found out was The Croup. Weekend plan changes! Back home on Saturday night, which was bad and Sunday wasn't much better. She got a few scrips to help out and is back toddling around like normal. [Wikipedia]

Being at home all week gave her the opportunity to practice her walking and she's pretty good now. Time to start working on her basketball skills!

Friday September 25

The Sheridan Invitational is done for another year. We had some amazing weather for the golf and the party. If you haven't seen the photos, they're on my Picasa site. Can't believe I've been doing this for 11 years...amazing. That's Rowan up there with Paul on Sunday afternoon...we watched some football together. The Redskins are in Detroit this weekend. I'd l ike to head up and see them kick some Lion tail, but I'm not sure what team will show up, not to mention the 7 hour round trip to Ford Field and back. Even though Detroit could use some of my cash money, I think I'll enjoy the NFL Ticket and the Red Zone Channel in my basement. Sounds like a plan! Prior to that, the Hoosiers invade The Big House in Ann Arbor on Saturday afternoon. I'm just hoping it's not a blowout! [Time]

Friday August 28th

First things first, Rowan won what dad calls the Baby of the Week from channel 15 news last Friday! They do 1st year birthday announcements every day, and Rowan was announced last Tuesday. Then on Friday, they hand out a Baby of the Week ice cream birthday cake from Dairy Queen and Rowan won! See the bottom for my screen grab of her photo on the news. The news and weather guy gave her a nice shout out on Friday. Very cool.

The above picture is from this week when Rowan finally met Della. They seemed to hit it off pretty well. Rowan really liked the kitty cats at the barn, but did pet Della a few times before we left.

Redskins tonight on CBS vs. the Patriots. We'll see if QB Campbell can pull his head out and play some good football before the real games start on the 13th. I know it's just preseason, but his starts are scary bad!

Friday June 26th

We will definitely have balloons at Rowan's birthday party in August. She loves them! We had a great weekend on the lake and I'll be getting some photo up sometime this weekend from our journey. Rowan was a champ in the car again. She's in training for the family vacation to DC and SC later on this summer.

Didn't make it out to Transformers yet this week, but I don't think they needed us just yet. Over $60M taken in on Thursday's opening day, this one is going to be a blockbuster. It's getting slayed by reviewers for the story and plot (21% fresh), but the CGI is supposed to be out of this world ; ) I think we may catch a matinee on Sunday afternoon, anyone interested? Might be skipping a few of the Webb Catchers I had put on my site. Year One looks terrible (18% fresh) and we'll wait for HBO viewing on that. Thursday June 18th

Belated Happy Birthday to Grandma Sheridan! Hope she had a good one.

Rowan is 10 months old today! Bought her a new swimsuit this afternoon and had to get the 18 month size. She's a big kid! Mom had her all oiled up for her bath this week, had to pop that photo.

Friday June 12th

Rowan says, "peas, please!" We've had a great week with Rowan. As you saw in the last post, she's clapping and crawling and soon will be getting into things. It's awesome. She's also getting her own little personality, and I see a bit of myself in it. Hopefully, she can have a bit more patience than the old man. She can get that from mom.

Some Happy Birthdays this Sunday. To my nieces in Texas, Grace and Ella celebrating their 3rd, my buddy Steve Lyng celebrating his 39th (!!!), and my good friend Simon Cook in the UK with his, what? 36th, I think. Oh yeah, and a Happy Flag Day to everyone else.

Saw The Hangover this week and the review is posted on the main page. I liked it, Brooke was more of a meh on it. As I predicted a few weeks ago, it trounced Land of the Lost, which finish 3rd for the week and will be on DVD by August 1 I think. Next big flick, if we don't see Up soon, is the new Transformers movie, Revenge of the Fallen. Need to avoid the extra trailers and sneak peeks on that. Well they unveiled the new iPhone 3G S on Monday. Video comes to the iPhone, a nice one too. It's as good as the one on my camera. The updated lens gives it a pretty sweet camera on there too. Biggest problem with the new iPhone? You're still stuck with AT&T service! If we are to upgrade ours, I think it will be after Apple allows other carriers to get in on the iPhone business. Then, we'll move on too, maybe...it is a pretty sweet upgrade I think. Time to move on over Christian! [Chicago Tribune]

Friday June 5th

Rowan started clapping last night. It was pretty cool. We all got into it in the kitchen with Butsu and Muki not exactly sure what was going on! She and I went to Sam's Club after work this week. She was very helpful, that's her in the cart at checkout. We also celebrated Poppa Sheridan's 68th birthday on Wednesday. Rowan insisted we continue getting Poppa his Sirius radio coverage.

Big iPhone news coming next week. Rumor is they will unveil the new iPhone on Monday afternoon. Read stories that it's to be called iPhone Video, since there'll be some upgrades in video capability, among other things. Brooke and I are looking forward to the free software upgrade that will come next week for older iPhones. The new phone itself will be released sometime in July. If you're looking to move into an iPhone, which I highly recommend, they're supposed to introduce new pricing structures for the phones themselves. No movie again this week! We were hitting them pretty consistently for a while and will again now that some good ones are coming out. I think we'll see The Hangover (IMDb) next week and sometime soon Up (IMDb). Both are getting great reviews with The Hangover at 78% and Up at 98% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. The new Land of the Lost (IMDb)? Not so much. Brooke doesn't know it yet, but we'll see Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (IMDb) on Thursday June 25th. Let me know if you're going to join us. Friday May 29th

Looked like Rowan picked up a purse habit this week. She did this all herself on the living room floor. Like she was ready to go shopping with mom!

It was a Happy Birthday for Muki kitty this week. He turned 11 on Wednesday.

No movies again this week, nothing we really wanted to see in the theaters or ones we've already seen. The summer season is picking up over the next couple of weeks. Up starts tonight and it looks like the next Disney-Pixar hit movie. It's getting great reviews and I can only imagine how it looks on screen, in 3D too. Opening next Friday is a potential hit with The Hangover. The previews have been well done and it looks very funny. It may even beat Land of the Lost on that weekend's take. Not sure how good LotL will be. I remember the TV show, but Brooke knew nothing about it. If it gets bad reviews or poor word of mouth, it could be out in a few weeks. IU coaches are on the Tailgate Tour for the last few weeks. The Fort Wayne trip is this Wednesday. Seems Crean's been a top draw on these things, as you'd expect. He did a great job firing up the crowd in Starlight, IN last week. [Courier Journal]

Hurricane Season starts on Monday. The website of the week is how you can follow along: Hurricane Storm Tracking. I've been going to this site for years. It breaks it down very easily with graphs showing the progression of the storm and predicts it's path. Let's hope for a peaceful season and as few of these hurricane names as possible. Friday May 22nd

Happy Memorial Day weekend! Gotta love these three day weekends when the weather's nice. Indy 500 on Sunday, hope it's a good race. Rowan took Butsu for a walk this week in the great weather. She handled him pretty well!

We had an amazing time last Saturday at the Cubs game. The picture update from Sunday showed plenty of those good times. That game must have been a high water mark for the Cubs, because they haven't won a game since! Not a very consistent Cub team this year. Here's a photo of Rowan's 'first' trip to Wrigley in April of '08 (a W vs. the Pirates).

Then one of her first appearance at Wrigley last weekend (a W vs. the Astros).

No movies this week, but I suggest getting out to see Star Trek. It's a keeper. My review is up on the main page, spydeyswebb.com. There's some good ones coming up the first few weeks of June. First off, Happy Mother's Day to all my mother readers. This is Brooke's first one and we're quite excited little Ro's here with us. This weekend is garage sale time again (remember last year?), Yippee! When I was home for lunch today, Brooke was already at $66. Not bad since we did about $95 total last year. Happy May Day! Rowan getting a little belly time in this week with dad. She's not crawling yet, but we're working on it! [Wikipedia]

Very happy with the Redskins first round pick last Saturday. Maybe my bro-in-law Ryan will become a Redskin fan, as they picked former Texas Longhorn DE Brian Orakpo with the 13th pick overall. The other 4 picks were pretty blah, but this one was the right one. He and Haynesworth on the defensive frontline will cause some havoc next season. Already looking forward to it. [Sporting News]

It's Wolverine Friday, and I think we'll be going next week. It's getting questionable reviews, but sounds like most are comparing it to the Spider-Man and Batman movies, which are classics. I think this will be standard comic book movie fare. I'm looking forward to it. [IMDb.com]

Friday April 24th

Rowan had lots of daddy time this week. I stayed home on Monday, which was a planned day off since I thought I'd be getting home late from the Sunday night Cubbie game. No game, but took the day anyway. We had lots of fun. Tuesday was barn night for mom, so dad was in charge again. This pic is from one of our times playing together.

Like the new color scheme of the blog? I've been looking for a new template all week and finally just changed the colors of the one I currently have. Seemed all the other templates I used would erase half the widgets I have on the right side! That would be no good. I'll keep looking, any comments are welcome. [BTemplates]

NFL Draft this weekend. I can only hope the Redskins are kidding about going for another QB, which would be a new QB, which would be even more time before we're a serious contender for a Super Bowl. We have more pressing concerns (OL or LB or DB), and Campbell's getting better. I know this is too much Redskins talk for everyone, but I had to vent a little cause it they trade to get Sanchez tomorrow, I may need to find a new favorite team! Hadn't heard much about him, but he looks like he's getting better as he gets older. Got out to see State of Play last night or as I told people what movie we were seeing, "the new Russell Crowe one". We really enjoyed it and the review will be up on the main page sometime this weekend. Brooke said at the theater that it'd been a while since we'd seen a movie like this, and it's true. We stick mostly to comedies or comic book/super hero flicks! Speaking of comics, Wolverine comes out a week from today. Not sure if it's an opening night trip, but sometime in the first week we'd like to check this one out.
